My First Writers' Group
I've just been to my first ever writers' group, Word Central.
Previously, I've avoided writing courses and writers' groups as if they were some sort of plague that might bring my creativity out in disfiguring hives.
After working with Coffee House Players for four months, I came to the conclusion that my reservations were a somewhat silly obstacle, to both improving my writing and learning about other talented local writers.
Seven members of The Coffee House Players have contributed sketch scripts for our upcoming show, Several Deadly Sketches. Having so many writers bouncing ideas off each other has been a help, not a hindrance, so when I stumbled upon Word Central online, I decided to give it a shot.
The group was definitely a good discovery. I found the people, a dozen or so men and women from a variety of age groups, very welcoming and friendly. Members write for a variety of different genres, which made things very interesting. I was particularly excited by a poem/very-short-story called "Him" by [somebody help me out here?]. There was also a chap who had a wonderful reading voice, which I could listen to all day.
I'd definitely like to return to Word Central and look for further opportunities to mix with other writers in Exeter.
