10 Great Indie Books That Are Available in Paperback

Most book lovers know that self-publishing eBooks is a growing trend, but not everybody knows that many of the top independently published novels, are also available in paperback. Here's a summary of ten great indie paperbacks, based on my own observations about how other people respond to them.

1. In the Blood by Steve Robinson

This popular crime thriller set in Cornwall spans many generations, so you get to enjoy not just modern day Cornwall but an insight into the beautiful county's past as well.

This is the first book in a growing series, with books two and three already available in paperback. So if you like a detective you can really commit to, Jefferson Tayte is it.

Price: £7.99 (10/08/2013)

2. House of Silence by Linda Gillard

A country house mystery... A family drama... A romantic comedy...

Orphaned by drink, drugs and rock n' roll, Gwen Rowland is invited to spend Christmas at her boyfriend Alfie's family home, Creake Hall - a ramshackle Tudor manor in Norfolk. Soon after she arrives, Gwen senses something isn't quite right.

Linda was recently featured in the Guardian's Self-Publishing Showcase.

Price: £6.40 (10/08/2013)

3. Wool by Hugh Howey

In a ruined and hostile landscape, in a future few have been unlucky enough to survive, a community exists in a giant underground silo.

Inside, men and women live an enclosed life full of rules and regulations, of secrets and lies.

Hugh Howey's independently published hit book WOOL has been translated into 23 languages and has been picked up by Ridley Scott for a film adaptation.

Price: £3.99 (10/08/2013)

4. Tollesbury Time Forever by Stuart Ayris

When Beatles-obsessed alcoholic, Simon Anthony, attempts to drown himself in the Tollesbury Salt Marshes he hopes that his tortuous time on this earth will be at an end. To his dismay he awakes in the local village lock-up. He is still in Tollesbury but the year is 1836. Or is it?

This book was voted the best indie books of 2013. It's the first in Stu's 'Frugality' triology, all of which are available in paperback.

Price: £7.28 (10/08/2013)

5. Cruel Justice by Mel Comley

The headless body of a wealthy widow is discovered decomposing in Chelling Forest. Then a second victim is found. Detective Inspector Lorne Simpkins and her partner, DS Pete Childs are assigned the case. Before they can discover the identity of the killer they must make a connection between the two victims.

We meet D.I. Lorne Simpkins for the first time in Cruel Justice, the beginning of Mel's highly acclaimed crime thriller series.

Price: £8.99 (10/08/2013)

6. The Macabre Collection by David Haynes

Step onto the shadowy streets of Victorian London and experience the terror of The Macabre Collection. The date is January 10th 1866 and the snow is falling thick on the blood soaked streets of London.

David Haynes is becoming an incredibly prolific author, having released three eBooks so far this year. Now all three books are available in one paperback volume.

Price: £4.70 (10/08/2013)

7. The Killer Within by Gary Copeland

Dubbed 'The mutilator' by the media, the original killer had murdered seven women, one man, and a child, each of them tortured and dismembered, their bodies staged, and the signature of a yellow rose left at the crime scene; all within the space of seven days.

This book is currently one of FeedARead's fiction bestsellers, second only to Steve Robinson's books.

Price: £4.70 (10/08/2013)

8. Treespeaker by Katie W. Stewart

A forest tribe are visited by a dangerous outsider and the man who can save them has been expelled from the village.

This is the first of Katie's titles to become available in paperback. It's a fantasy title that's reported to be popular among those who don't generally care for fantasy - high praise indeed.

Price: £9.22 (10/08/2013)

9. Ice Diaries by Lexi Revellian

It's 2018 and Tori's managing. Okay, so London is under twenty metres of snow, almost everybody has died in a pandemic or been airlifted south, and the only animals around are rats. Plus her boyfriend never returned from going to find his parents a year ago when the snow began - but she's doing fine. Really.

Lexi is an extremely popular British Indie author and The Ice Diaries was voted one of the best indie books of 2012.

Price: £6.99 (10/08/2013)

10. Auto by David Wailing

And finally, here's one to watch out for - coming soon...

Digital detective Joanna O'Donnell has heard stories about technology going wrong, twisting people's lives inside out. She doesn't believe it. Until it happens to her.

David Wailing has been releasing Auto short stories since April 2012, but he's recently tied them all together in a collection. Reviewers boast that the stories are enhanced by being brought together. The paperback release is scheduled for September.
