Review: Lindy Bop 'Hetty' Vintage-Style 1950's Rockabilly Dress in Purple
Here's the next in my series of dress reviews. If any store would like to send me a size 12 swing dress to review, please get in touch.
I am just gutted that all the white Hetty dresses in my size have sold out. I own a purple one and I have to wrestle with myself to take it off to wash.
STYLE
The Hetty is a style of 1950s rockabilly dress characterised by a tight fitting top, full circle skirt and shawl-like collar. It can be worn as a day dress or you can jazz it up with a funky flared petticoat. I've yet to see a figure that's not flattered by a Hetty or her cousin, Audrey (very similar but without the collar).
FIT
The size 12 fits me perfectly. It can be hard to find dresses that fit because my hips are size 12-14 and my bust is 10-12, but this dress fits me perfectly. The fabric has a slight stretch, so if your weight tends to oscillate a little, you don't need to worry.
FABRIC
The fabric is great quality. The outer layer is brushed cotton and the top's lined, which means you get that little bit extra warmth. It's December and I still wear mine regularly, with just a few knitted trimmings.
COLOUR
On my monitor the purple dress looks almost indigo; in actuality it's more of an aubergine shade. However, this could be due to the display settings on my laptop and, if anything, I actually prefer the more purple purple.
The black polka dots are just subtle enough to break up the colour without being overpowering.
QUALITY
The dress is very professionally manufactured. There are one or two stitches out of place, but nothing that shows. The belt tends to wrinkle up when I'm wearing it and could do with an extra loop to stop the excess sticking out.
PIZAZZ
I feel effortlessly pretty in this dress - date confident, in fact. I've worn this on more than one date and I get compliments like 'refreshing', 'unique' and 'charming'. More importantly, this dress make me feel like me.
Paired with a contrasting underskirt like turquoise, this dress would elevate from 'cute date' to 'party girl'.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Rather embarrassingly, I wrote to Lindy Bop and demanded a new belt because I thought my buckle was faulty. It turned out I had the belt on inside out. I found the staff polite and courteous.
