Ten-Year-Olds' Classwork in Paperback
One of the smelly troll books I'm most proud of is a A Touch of Trolls. It's also the one that I can take the least credit for, because it was written by a group of ten-year-old children.
The class got to know The Troll Trap because their teacher chose to use it for guided reading. Then in the playground, she overheard the children discussing ideas for future troll books and decided to add troll story writing to the term's syllabus.
The children emailed me their first chapters and I thought they were so brilliant that I offered to put the completed stories together in a paperback collection. My copy arrived today. It's safe to say that it is absolutely wonderful.
The book includes twenty-four short stories by the young writers, including 'The Easter Troll', 'Bon Appétit Sir' and 'Bruno's Got Talent' as well as a specially written contribution from me, 'Stranger Danger'.
The book also includes beautiful, hand drawn illustrations by the young authors themselves. Professional children's illustrator, Katie W. Stewart guided them through to process of creating illustrations for books. I'm not sure how their teacher feels about this - there is a montage of portraits of her as a troll, which fills a two-page spread!
I recently blogged some of my favourite quotes from the book. These include some very creative troll food such as 'slug chips battered in bogeys and coated in saliva gravy' and 'eyeball canapés'. They are certainly a creative class.
The class wrote their own blurb:
Delve into the disgusting world of brainless, gruesome trolls in a multitude of new adventures with Bruno, Polly, Rufus and the whole Super-Troll-Knobbly-Foot Posse.
A collection the whole family can enjoy together, just have a bucket handy, you might need it.

That's very kind of you to say. Thank you.
They were a lovely class and produced some wonderful work. The finished book is snotacular!
As a parent of one of the kids who took part in this...all I can say is thank you! You have been such an inspiration to my daughter, and I love this book! Such a great idea!
